Citrine

Citrine

A bit of History & Science

Citrine is a radiant gemstone known for its warm, golden hues, reminiscent of the sun's glow. It belongs to the quartz family and is often found in shades ranging from pale yellow to deep amber. Citrine derives its name from the French word "citron," meaning lemon, due to its vibrant citrus-like colour.

Natural citrine originates from the gradual heating of amethyst under high temperatures within the Earth's crust. This heat changes the colour of the iron impurities in amethyst from purple to yellow, creating natural citrine. Natural citrine can be found in Bolivia, Madagascar, Mexico, Spain, Russia, Brazil, and Uruguay.

From ancient times citrine was believed to calm tempers, ward off negative thoughts and attract prosperity. Ancient Greeks used citrine for decorative purposes, carving iconic images into it, Egyptians used citrine as a talisman, worshipping it as a sunstone, Roman priests wore it in their rings, Chinese Emperors - in their jewelries. Citrine is also known as a “Merchant Stone” as it is associated with success and wealth and was widely worn by merchants and traders.
